Year 1 Phonics

In Year 1 there is a huge focus on the children's phonetic knowledge and ensuring that children become more confident with decoding words and becoming a more fluent reader. At the end of Year 1 children will complete a National Phonics Screening Test. This is a test of 40 words (some real and some alien/nonsense words) to see if they have the phonetic knowledge to decode unfamiliar words. This page is a place for you to access phonics support materials however if you have any questions or concerns please don't hesitate to ask! During the first half term we will arrange a Year 1 phonics meeting where we will discuss how to support your child with their phonics/reading at home and what we are doing in school so that together we can ensure your child is a happy, confident and passionate reader.

As the term progresses I will upload videos of how to pronounce sounds and helpful tips and tricks!

KS1 Reading Vipers

As well as learning to decode and read words, we work really hard in KS1 to develop children's comprehension. Children begin to learn terminology to help them answer comprehension questions.  We use VIPERS to help them answer comprehension questions confidently.
